Tauren
Tauren are huge, bull-like nomads of the plains of Kalimdor and the Horde's gentle giants. They follow the Earth Mother, live in harmony with the land, and in Classic make their home in the grasslands of Mulgore and the mesa-top city of Thunder Bluff. They are the largest playable race in the game, the Horde's only druids, and their War Stomp is one of the few racial abilities that can stun several enemies at once.
History
The tauren have wandered Kalimdor for thousands of years, hunting the great kodo herds and honoring the Earth Mother and her children, the sun An'she and the moon Mu'sha. By the time of the Third War the scattered tribes were losing a long war against the centaur, who drove them from their lands. The orcs, newly arrived in Kalimdor under Thrall, helped Cairne Bloodhoof and his Bloodhoof tribe fight off the centaur. In return Cairne guided the orcs toward Mount Hyjal, and the tauren joined the Horde.
Cairne then gathered the other tribes in the fertile plains of Mulgore and founded Thunder Bluff. Not all tauren accepted his leadership: the Grimtotem tribe, led by Magatha Grimtotem, resents the alliance with the orcs and works against Cairne from within the city and in the wilds of Thousand Needles and Stonetalon.
Homeland and starting zone
New tauren begin at Camp Narache, a small encampment on Red Cloud Mesa in the south of Mulgore. Grull Hawkwind starts them on The Hunt Begins, hunting plainstriders and mountain cougars, while Chief Hawkwind (Chief Hawkwind) sends them on the Rite of Strength against the quilboar of the Battleboar camp. The rites of passage end with a climb down from the mesa into the green valley below.

The road then leads north to Bloodhoof Village, the heart of Mulgore, and on to Thunder Bluff. At around level 10 tauren head east into The Barrens through Camp Taurajo, where they meet the orcs and trolls of the Crossroads. Travel to the Eastern Kingdoms goes through the zeppelins outside Orgrimmar.
Capital
Thunder Bluff is built on four flat-topped mesas joined by rope bridges, high above northern Mulgore. Cairne Bloodhoof leads from the central rise, the Elder Rise is home to the druids, the Spirit Rise to shamans and the Grimtotem, and the Hunter Rise to hunters and warriors. Elevators carry travelers up and down the cliffs, and a wind rider tower links the city to the rest of Kalimdor. Tauren ride great kodos, bought from Harb Clawhoof in Bloodhoof Village.
Racial traits
| Trait | Effect |
|---|---|
| War Stomp | Active: stuns up to five enemies within 8 yards for 2 seconds, 2-minute cooldown |
| Endurance | Total health increased by 5% |
| Cultivation | Herbalism skill increased by 15 |
| Nature Resistance | Nature resistance increased by 10 |
Endurance makes tauren tanky at every level, as 5 percent extra health counts more as gear improves. Cultivation lets tauren herbalists pick herbs earlier than other races. War Stomp has a short cast time, so it can be interrupted, but it works on every class.
Classes
Tauren can be warriors, hunters, shamans and druids. They are the only Horde race that can be a druid, and with night elves, one of only two in the game. They cannot be rogues, mages, warlocks or priests in Classic.

How tauren play
War Stomp is the tauren's main tool in player-versus-player combat. A two-second stun on everyone nearby stops rogues, interrupts healers and lets a tauren escape, catch up or land a big attack. A tauren warrior can stomp, then use the time for a free Mortal Strike; a tauren shaman can stomp to stop a rogue's attacks and get off a heal or a Lightning Bolt. In battlegrounds, stomping a group around a flag carrier or a capture point can turn a fight.
Their size cuts both ways. Tauren have a larger body than any other race, so melee enemies can reach them from a little farther away, and their big model is easy to spot and click. Still, the extra health and War Stomp made tauren a popular choice for warriors, and tauren druids and shamans were the backbone of many Horde raids as healers.
Notable tauren
Cairne Bloodhoof is the high chieftain of the tauren and one of the most respected figures in the Horde. His son Baine (Baine Bloodhoof) appears in Bloodhoof Village. The Archdruid Hamuul Runetotem leads the druids of Thunder Bluff and belongs to the Cenarion Circle, which also has tauren members in Moonglade. Magatha Grimtotem, the elder crone of the Grimtotem, is a quieter enemy within the city.
Later history
In Cataclysm Cairne was killed in a duel with Garrosh Hellscream after Magatha poisoned the blade, and Baine became high chieftain. Later expansions added paladins and priests of the Sunwalker order, and the Highmountain tauren as an allied race.
