Zandalar Tribe

The Zandalar Tribe is the faction of the Zandalari, the oldest of the troll tribes, who came to Stranglethorn Vale in patch 1.7 to stop the Blood God Hakkar the Soulflayer from rising again in Zul'Gurub. Their camp on Yojamba Isle is the hub for everything in that raid: its quests, its class armor and its enchantments. Zandalar reputation decided which of Zul'Gurub's rewards a player could claim, from the class sets to the shoulder enchantments every raider wanted.

Who they are

The Zandalari are the tribe from which all other trolls descend. Their warlike members left long ago to found tribes of their own, and those who stayed became scholars and priests, keepers of troll history whom the other tribes respected without being ruled by them. When the Sundering tore the world apart, their magic kept their homeland intact as an island.

Thousands of years ago, the Gurubashi of Stranglethorn turned to Hakkar for power, and the Soulflayer grew fat on their sacrifices. The Zandalari warned the jungle trolls of what he was, and together the tribes rose against him and drove out his Atal'ai priests. The Gurubashi Empire fell soon after. In Classic, the Atal'ai have succeeded in calling Hakkar back into Zul'Gurub and have bent several tribes and the avatars of the troll gods to his will. With the jungle tribes divided, the Zandalari have crossed the sea to recruit outsiders: adventurers of the Alliance and the Horde alike.

Where to find them

Everything happens on Yojamba Isle, a small island off the northwest coast of Stranglethorn Vale. Molthor leads the expedition. Around him are Rin'wosho the Trader, who sells recipes, the class quest givers Jin'rokh the Breaker, Al'tabim the All-Seeing, Maywiki of Zuldazar and Falthir the Sightless, Exzhal, who wants trophies from the troll tribes, and Vinchaxa, who takes coins and bijous. Inside Zul'Gurub itself, the ghost Zanza the Restless offers the head and leg enchantments.

The Zandalar enchantments

The rewards that kept raiders coming back were enchantments for the head, legs and shoulders.

Class armor and amulets

Each class has a Zandalar armor set, whose pieces are traded for Primal Hakkari tokens from the raid's bosses. Each class has three set quests, the first open at Friendly, the next at Honored and the last at Revered; one example is Paragons of Power: The Vindicator's Breastplate, which gives the [Zandalar Vindicator's Breastplate]. At Friendly, each class can also start a neck piece from the class quest givers, such as Falthir's The Maelstrom's Tendril, and upgrade it at each new standing up to an Exalted version like [Maelstrom's Wrath].

History and trivia

  • The faction and Yojamba Isle arrived with Zul'Gurub in patch 1.7, the first 20-player raid in the game.
  • The faction was frozen in Cataclysm, when Zul'Gurub was rebuilt as a five-player dungeon; reputation could no longer be earned until a Timewalking commendation was added in patch 11.0.5.
  • The Zandalari returned as the main villains of later troll stories, from the Mists of Pandaria assault on the Isle of Thunder to the Zandalari Empire of Battle for Azeroth, ruled by King Rastakhan, the king Molthor serves.
