Atal'alarion

This is revision 1, from Oct 29, 2026 04:23. See the current page.

Atal'alarion, Guardian of the Idol, is a hulking dire troll sealed away in the flooded lower level of the Sunken Temple in the Swamp of Sorrows. He doesn't appear until a group solves the temple's best-known puzzle, a circle of serpent statues that must be touched in the right order. He guards the Idol of Hakkar and the treasure beneath it.

Background

The Atal'ai are troll priests who tried to summon the blood god Hakkar the Soulflayer and were cast out of the Gurubashi Empire for it. They built a temple in the swamp, and the dragon Aspect Ysera sank it into the marsh to stop them. Atal'alarion is a dire troll, one of the huge, primitive trolls of old, bound to protect the idol at the bottom of the temple. When he is freed he roars that his banishment has ended and the blood will flow.

His chamber is in the optional lower level, under the main ring of the temple. Six snake statues stand on ledges around a pool, with the idol in the middle.

Summoning him

The statues must be activated in this order:

  1. South
  2. North
  3. Southwest
  4. Southeast
  5. Northwest
  6. Northeast

Each pack of trolls and undead around the ledges should be cleared first. When the last statue lights up, Atal'alarion rises from the pool and attacks.

Abilities

Otherwise he simply hits hard in melee.

Strategy

Atal'alarion has no adds and only one ability, so he is one of the easier fights in the temple.

  • Clear the room completely before touching the statues, since the guard packs can join if they are still alive.
  • He can be pulled to the stairs and fought there, clear of anything else.
  • Keep ranged players out of range of Ground Tremor so the healer can keep healing through the stuns.

Loot

His three blue items each drop about a third of the time in our data. He also drops the [[forever:item:22444]] for druids on their class quest and the [Fetish of Hakkar] for a Horde quest.

Item Chance
[Headspike] 33%
[Atal'alarion's Tusk Ring] 33%
[Darkwater Bracers] 33%
[[forever:item:22444]] 100%
[Fetish of Hakkar] 80%

Headspike is a polearm with Agility and Strength. Despite its name, [Atal'alarion's Tusk Ring] is a plate belt.

Trivia

Later history

Cataclysm (patch 4.0.3a) removed the lower level of the temple, and Atal'alarion with it. He returned in Season of Discovery, where the Sunken Temple became a raid.
