Ysera
Ysera the Dreamer is the Dragon Aspect of the green dragonflight and guardian of the Emerald Dream, a spirit realm that mirrors the natural world. She spends most of history asleep within it, tending the wild places of Azeroth and the druids who walk the Dream. In the original World of Warcraft she is never seen, but her flight is central to some of Classic's best-known content: the corrupted dragon Eranikus in the Sunken Temple, the four Dragons of Nightmare who burst out of her Dream in patch 1.8, and the green shard of the Scepter of the Shifting Sands.
Biography
The Titans chose Ysera, a younger sister of Alexstrasza, to watch over growing things. The titan Eonar bound her to the Emerald Dream, an untouched version of the world where nature's patterns are kept, and Ysera fell into a waking trance. Her eyes are usually shown closed.
She fought the Burning Legion in the War of the Ancients, and afterward helped Alexstrasza and Nozdormu plant and bless the World Tree Nordrassil. Ysera's gift to the night elf druids was the path into the Emerald Dream, where they could sleep for long periods and help keep the world in balance. Her blessing is why night elf druids of Classic, such as the Druids of the Talon in the Ban'ethil Barrow Den on Teldrassil, sleep in barrow dens; A Troubling Breeze calls their slumber a pact with Ysera.
During the events of the Day of the Dragon novel, she helped force Deathwing back. Soon after, she sensed something dark growing in the Dream itself: the Emerald Nightmare, a corruption seeded by the Old Gods.
In World of Warcraft
When World of Warcraft begins, the Nightmare has spread and Ysera has gone silent. She is fighting it inside the Dream alongside Malfurion Stormrage and Cenarius, and some of her most trusted servants have fallen.
Eranikus and the Sunken Temple
Eranikus, Ysera's own consort, was charged with guarding the Temple of Atal'Hakkar in the Swamp of Sorrows and was corrupted. Players face Shade of Eranikus at the bottom of the Sunken Temple (Sunken Temple). The green dragon Itharius, who hides in the Swamp of Sorrows, wants to redeem him rather than destroy him. In The Essence of Eranikus, players bring him the essence of Eranikus with the [Oathstone of Ysera's Dragonflight] and choose to help Ysera's flight.
The Dragons of Nightmare

Patch 1.8 (October 2005) added four green dragons as world bosses. These were Ysera's lieutenants, now driven mad by the Nightmare, coming out through the portals at four Great Trees: Bough Shadow in Ashenvale, the Twilight Grove in Duskwood, the Dream Bough in Feralas and Seradane in The Hinterlands. Lore ties each dragon to one portal, but in the game the four dragons rotated between the trees.
All four are level 63 elites with about 830,000 health, built for 40-player raids. They share a set of abilities:
- Noxious Breath is a poisonous breath that hits everyone standing in front of the dragon, so the tank faces it away from the raid.
- Seeping Fog leaves sleep-inducing clouds that drift across the battlefield.
- Mark of Nature marks anyone who dies in the fight; a marked player who runs back in is put to sleep, so dying means sitting the rest of the fight out.
- A tail sweep knocks back anyone standing behind the dragon.
Each also has a signature mechanic, usually triggered at 75%, 50% and 25% health:
| Dragon | Signature abilities |
|---|---|
| Ysondre | Lightning Wave, and summons Demented Druid Spirits |
| Emeriss | Volatile Infection, and Corruption of the Earth, which damages the raid; players who die sprout poisonous mushrooms |
| Lethon | Shadow Bolt Whirl, and Draw Spirit, which pulls shades out of players that heal Lethon if they reach him |
| Taerar | Arcane Blast and a fear, and splits into three copies of Shade of Taerar while he turns untargetable |
Each dragon has its own loot, such as Taerar's [Nightmare Blade] or Emeriss's [Polished Ironwood Crossbow], plus a shared pool that includes [Green Dragonskin Cloak] and [Hammer of Bestial Fury]. Every kill also drops a [Nightmare Engulfed Object]. Taking it to Keeper Remulos in Moonglade through Shrouded in Nightmare and Waking Legends rewards [Malfurion's Signet Ring].

The green scepter shard
The Opening of the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj quest line sends players to Eranikus once more. In [[forever:quest:8733]], Malfurion Stormrage reveals that Eranikus held the green shard of the Scepter of the Shifting Sands. The chain moves through Teldrassil and ends in Moonglade with [[forever:quest:8736]], where players defend Nighthaven from the raging dragon until Tyrande Whisperwind arrives to cleanse him. Eranikus is redeemed and the shard goes back to the bronze dragons.
Ysera's daughter [[forever:npc:15378]] flies in with the other Aspects' children during the gate-opening scene, and [[forever:npc:15504]] of the Brood of Ysera stands inside the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj.
Later history
Ysera awoke during Cataclysm, helped defend Mount Hyjal, and joined the other Aspects in destroying Deathwing, losing her Aspect powers in the process. In Legion she was corrupted by the Nightmare's master Xavius and killed by Tyrande and the Cenarion Circle. Her spirit went to Ardenweald in the Shadowlands, where she was reborn. She returned to Azeroth in Dragonflight and later passed her role as Aspect to her daughter Merithra.
