Classic Hardcore

Classic Hardcore is Blizzard's official one-life ruleset for World of Warcraft Classic, launched on August 24, 2023. A character who dies on a Hardcore realm is dead for good: there is no running back to the corpse and no resurrection. It was inspired by a player-run Hardcore challenge that existed before Blizzard supported the idea, and it was the first time Blizzard opened permanent-death realms for the game.

Background

Before Blizzard supported it, Hardcore was a community challenge. Players agreed to delete or retire a character after one death and used their own rule sets and addons to track deaths and keep each other honest.

Blizzard announced official Hardcore realms in a June 28, 2023 post titled "Rules of Engagement: Classic Hardcore is Coming to World of Warcraft", and the realms opened in the Americas and Europe on August 24, 2023.

Rules

Death is permanent. A dead character cannot return to its corpse or be resurrected by another player. The character can still log in as a ghost to chat or to hand over guild leadership. Blizzard offers a free Character Move service to send a dead character to a normal Classic Era realm, where it can keep playing.

PvP is opt-in. Attacking an enemy player no longer flags you for PvP automatically, and you cannot attack a flagged enemy unless you flag yourself. Battlegrounds are turned off. Players who want to fight to the death can challenge each other with a "duel to the death", called Mak'gora after the orcish tradition, using the /makgora command.

Closing loopholes. Several changes remove ways to cheat death or to get killed unfairly:

  • Most monsters now leash and reset when pulled out of their area, so players cannot drag them across a zone onto other players.
  • Escort quests can no longer be disrupted by the opposing faction, and quests that required a character's death were reworked.
  • Paladins cannot use their [Hearthstone] while protected by Divine Shield or a similar bubble, removing the "bubble hearth" escape.
  • The shaman ability Reincarnation is removed.
  • Every dungeon has at least a 24-hour lockout for characters under level 60, and level 60 characters cannot run low-level dungeons with lower-level players. Group experience limits from Season of Mastery prevent power-leveling.
  • The limits of 32 buffs and 16 debuffs are removed.

No phases. All of the original game's content, from Molten Core to Naxxramas, is available from launch.

When a guild member dies, the rest of the guild sees a notice in chat and on screen.

Self-Found mode

On February 29, 2024 Blizzard added Self-Found mode, an optional extra challenge chosen at character creation. A Self-Found character cannot use the mail, the auction house or trade with other players in any way, including enchanting each other's gear. Other players see a "Self-Found Adventurer" buff on the character. Self-Found can be turned off by speaking to an Apprentice Watcher in Ironforge, Darnassus, Orgrimmar or Undercity, but once off it cannot be turned back on. A Self-Found character who reaches level 60 without dying earns the "Unbroken Self-Found Champion" buff.

Later history

  • 20th Anniversary Edition. The anniversary realms that launched on November 21, 2024 included a Hardcore realm that releases content in phases, like the other anniversary realms.
  • China. Hardcore realms opened in China on November 22, 2024.
  • DDoS resurrections. Blizzard's rule is that dead is dead, but in rare cases of major server instability it has made exceptions. In March 2025 it began resurrecting Hardcore characters that died during distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on its servers.
  • World of Warcraft: Forever. Blizzard plans a Hardcore ruleset for World of Warcraft: Forever after the game's launch. See How Realms Work in WoW Forever.
