Ragglesnout

Ragglesnout is a rare quilboar priest who sometimes appears in Razorfen Downs. He is a living quilboar serving among the undead of the Downs, and he fights with shadow magic, mind control and heals. He is a level 40 rare elite, and the chance at his two-handed sword, [X'caliboar], whose name is a pun on Excalibur, is what made groups look for him.

Background

Razorfen Downs is the burial ground of the quilboar, now held by the lich Amnennar the Coldbringer and the Death's Head, quilboar priests who have taken up necromancy. Many of the Downs' quilboar are undead, but not all. Ragglesnout is alive, a quilboar caster who serves alongside the undead.

The game gives him no story of his own, but his spells say something about him. He uses the same shadow magic and mind control as the Death's Head priests of Razorfen Kraul, such as Death Speaker Jargba, a sign he belongs to the same cult. Fans have pointed to him as a clue to how the alliance between the quilboar and The Scourge works: some quilboar seem to have joined the undead willingly, or at least believe the Scourge are their friends, even while Amnennar raises their dead into his army.

Abilities

• Dominate Mind: takes control of a player for several seconds, slowing their attacks while charmed.
• Shadow Bolt: a single-target Shadow bolt.
• Shadow Word: Pain: Shadow damage over time on one player.
• Heal: heals himself or an ally.

Strategy

When he spawns, Ragglesnout is found in the Spiral of Thorns just past Glutton.

• Clear the quilboar around him before engaging, so his heals have no allies to save.
• Interrupt his Heal and his Shadow Bolt. Kick, Pummel, Shield Bash and Counterspell all work.
• Dominate Mind can turn a player against the group. Crowd-control the charmed player rather than kill them; a Polymorph or a priest's Psychic Scream keeps them out of trouble until it ends.
• Priests and paladins can dispel Shadow Word: Pain.
• He is a caster with modest health for a level 40 elite. Once his heals are being interrupted, the fight is short.

Loot

X'caliboar is a two-handed sword with 20 Strength and 8 Stamina, a fine weapon for a warrior or paladin in their late 30s. The Savage Boar's Guard is a shield with Strength and Stamina, and the Boar Champion's Belt a mail belt with 15 Strength.

Later history

Patch 2.3.0 lowered his level to 37, and Cataclysm raised it to 45. Warlords of Draenor (patch 6.0.2) rebuilt Razorfen Downs and removed him. He returned with World of Warcraft Classic in 2019.
