Troll

This is revision 1, from Oct 29, 2026 04:23. See the current page.

Trolls of the Darkspear tribe are the lanky, tusked jungle folk who sailed to Kalimdor with Thrall and became the Horde's fourth race. In Classic they share the Valley of Trials in Durotar with the orcs, keep a village on the coast at Sen'jin, and answer to their leader Vol'jin in Orgrimmar. Their racial traits are about speed and recovery: Berserking for burst haste and Regeneration for faster healing, with bonuses for bows, thrown weapons and fighting beasts.

History

Trolls are among the oldest races of Azeroth. Long before the night elves, the Gurubashi Empire of the jungle trolls and the Amani Empire of the forest trolls ruled much of the world, with temples to their loa gods at places such as Zul'Gurub and Zul'Farrak. Most troll tribes in Classic are still hostile to every other race: the Gurubashi have been taken over by the blood god Hakkar the Soulflayer, and the Sandfury, Witherbark, Vilebranch and Frostmane trolls attack players across the world.

The Darkspear tribe is the exception. Driven from their home islands, they were held captive by murlocs and sea witches when Thrall's orcs arrived during the Third War and freed them. Their leader Sen'jin was killed in the fighting, and his son Vol'jin swore the Darkspear's loyalty to Thrall. The tribe settled on the Echo Isles off Durotar, but in Classic they have been driven from the islands by a witch doctor, Zalazane, who uses dark magic to enslave other trolls. The Darkspear now live in Sen'jin Village on the mainland, waiting to retake their home.

Homeland and starting zone

Trolls have no starting area of their own. They begin with orcs in the Valley of Trials in Durotar, taking the same early quests from Gornek against boars, scorpids, quilboars and the Burning Blade. Troll priests and mages are trained in the valley by fellow Darkspear such as Ken'jai.

At the end of the valley's quests, many trolls take Report to Sen'jin Village to meet Master Gadrin, who leads the quest chain to kill Zalazane on the Echo Isles. From there trolls follow the usual Horde route through Razor Hill and into The Barrens, then on to Stonetalon Mountains, Ashenvale and the zeppelins to the Eastern Kingdoms.

Capital

Trolls live in Orgrimmar, the orcs' capital, where Vol'jin advises Thrall. The city's Valley of Spirits holds its priest, shaman and mage trainers, many of them trolls, and Darkspear traders and trainers can be found throughout the city. Trolls ride raptors, bought from Zjolnir in Sen'jin Village.

Racial traits

Trait Effect
Berserking Active: increases attack and casting speed by 10% to 30% for 10 seconds, more when hurt; 3-minute cooldown
Regeneration Health regeneration increased by 10%, and 10% of it continues in combat
Beast Slaying Damage dealt to beasts increased by 5%
[[forever:spell:26290]] +5 skill with bows
Throwing Specialization +5 skill with thrown weapons

Berserking comes in three versions for the three resource types: Berserking for mana users, [[forever:spell:26296]] for warriors and [[forever:spell:26297]] for rogues. It gives a minimum of 10 percent extra speed, rising toward 30 percent the lower the troll's health is when it is used. Regeneration is the only racial in Classic that keeps health regenerating in combat, a modest but steady bonus.

Classes

Trolls can be warriors, hunters, rogues, priests, shamans and mages, six classes, more than any other Horde race. They are the only Horde race besides Undead that can be a mage or a priest.

Troll priests learn Hex of Weakness, which reduces the target's damage and the healing it receives, and Shadowguard, a shield of shadows that strikes attackers with shadow bolts.

How trolls play

Berserking is a strong cooldown in raids: a troll mage or priest casts faster for ten seconds, and a troll warrior or rogue attacks faster. Used at low health, it can add 30 percent speed, which makes trolls dangerous when they appear to be losing a fight. Troll hunters were popular in raids because Bow Specialization lowers the chance to miss with bows, and Beast Slaying gives an edge in leveling and in fights against beasts such as Magmadar in Molten Core.

In player-versus-player combat, trolls lack a way to break fear or stun, which made them less common for warriors than orcs or Undead. Still, Berserking burst and Regeneration's healing in combat make them good rogues, mages and priests, and troll shamans and hunters were common sights in battlegrounds.

Notable trolls

Vol'jin leads the Darkspear tribe and is one of Thrall's closest advisers. Master Gadrin and the witch doctors of Sen'jin Village keep the tribe's old ways. Players also fight many hostile trolls: the priests of Zul'Gurub, the Sandfury of Zul'Farrak, Jin'do the Hexxer and the Atal'ai who serve Hakkar in the Sunken Temple.

Later history

The Darkspear retook the Echo Isles in Cataclysm, which gave trolls their own starting area there. Vol'jin later became warchief of the Horde, and the Zandalari trolls joined as an allied race.
